Birmingham keeper hurts England's plans
Ben Foster has livened up a slow news day with the shock revelation that he is taking an indefinite break from international duty, leaving England with something of a goalkeeping headache little over a year ahead of Euro 2012.
The Three Lions are [9.6] fourth favourites to win the competition for the first time in Poland and Ukraine next summer, however Foster's unexpected decision has now left Fabio Capello incredibly dependent on his current number one Joe Hart.
The Birmingham shot-stopper had established himself as second choice for England, and with Paul Robinson retiring and Robert Green being picked in squads but not once selected since the World Cup, it leaves Capello hugely vulnerable if the Manchester City man suffers an injury or dip in form.
Of course, Foster may intend to return to the fold prior to the Italian tactician's final tournament in charge, but if not the talent pool is alarming shallow, with Newcastle's Steve Harper and West Brom's Scott Carson the only other English custodians starting regularly in the Premier League.
Foster said: "Performing at the highest level game in, game out and particularly when there's been as many matches as there have been this season really takes it out of your body. It's no secret that I've had a few niggling injuries and that I've had to pull out of the past few England squads because of that.
"I've enjoyed my time with England and am certainly not closing a door on the international side of things forever but this is the right thing for me to do right now in terms of club football."
A strong pool of goalkeepers is a big deal at international level. The last two World Cup winners have been Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas, perhaps the best the 21st century has had to offer, while Euro 2012 favourites Spain ([4.1]) are able to call on Casillas, Pepe Reina, David de Gea and Victor Valdes.
Is Foster's decision a significant blow for England? Have your say below...
