MacDonald likely to miss out on Villa job

If a 6-0 defeat away to recently promoted Newcastle United wasn't enough to end Kevin MacDonald's chances of being handed the Aston Villa job on a permanent basis, his admirable eagerness to take the blame for the catastrophe after the match almost certainly did.

The Betfair market has reacted to Villa's humiliating loss in the expected manner, with the caretaker boss now out to [8.6] to be chosen by owner Randy Lerner to take charge full-time.

USA coach Bob Bradley, who chose a good day to reiterate that he is interested in succeeding Martin O'Neill, is once again the favourite at [3.1], but the fact he isn't shorter indicates that punters are concerned that Lerner doesn't share Bradley's enthusiasm for striking up an all-American partnership.

Sven-Goran Eriksson is next up at [6.4], though you sense that if Aston Villa had seriously considered hiring the Swede, a move would already have been made, while Jurgen Klinsmann is [9.4].

Unless they wait for a managerial change elsewhere, which is a risky policy itself, then it looks like Villa will be forced to take a gamble whoever they appoint, so Klinsmann could be worth investing a few quid in.

Why? The greatest successes of both Bradley and Kilnsmann's coaching careers have come at international level but the German does at least have some experience of European club management courtesy of his spell at Bayern Munich, even if it wasn't the most memorable.
