Aston Villa try to keep star from Liverpool

Aston Villa are determined to keep their player of the year Stewart Downing at the club next season and will offer the winger a new contract in an attempt to stop him from being affected by rumours that Liverpool are considering a bid for him, according to Sky Sports.

The England international has been the star performer for the second city side in an otherwise disappointing campaign, flourishing in a previously unfamiliar role cutting in from the right wing role, scoring six goals and setting up nine to put them in contention for a top-half finish.

The 26-year-old has shown no indication of looking for a move despite claims that he is a prominent figure on Kenny Dalglish's shortlist and the Aston Villa hierarchy have apparently decided that they will fight to prevent him following the likes of Gareth Barry and James Milner out of the Villa Park exit.

It is reported that Randy Lerner and co understand that they will struggle to keep alleged Liverpool and Manchester United target Ashley Young in the west midlands beyond the summer though and are likely to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing when his current deal expires in 2012.

The former Watford man was quoted earlier this month discussing his desire to challenge for silverware and, having also made a point of mentioning that he is approaching his peak, it is fairly clear that the 25-year-old isn't prepared to be too patient in his pursuit of trophies.

Will the Reds' expected summer transfer frenzy thrust them into title contention? If you think so, they can be backed at [11.5] to finish first in 2011-12...
