Aston Villa renew interest in midfielder

Aston Villa are planning to once again attempt to prise Charlie Adam away from Blackpool in January, provided under-pressure manager Gerard Houllier is still in charge, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The popular midfielder remained at Bloomfield Road in January despite interest from a number of clubs, the most prominent perhaps being Liverpool, but is widely expected to move on in the summer, by which point he will only have a year remaining on his Tangerines contract.

Ian Holloway's primary reason for keeping him on the coast in the winter was to ensure that the Seasiders had the best possible chance of securing survival in their first Premier League campaign, a decision that he knew would reduce the amount of money that they would make when they sell him.

£12 million is the fee mentioned by the Mail as to what Blackpool would like to receive yet it is far from certain that they will be offered eight figures for the Scotland international when he will be available to sign on a free transfer just 12 months down the line.

The future of the 25-year-old may also depend on the outcome of the enthralling relegation battle as neither Blackpool nor Aston Villa are guaranteed to be in the top-flight next season.

Both hover precariously a point above the drop with eight games to play and are on disappointing runs of one win in six, yet despite having five home matches remaining, Holloway's team are rated more likely to be relegated at [2.24], with Villa apparently considered too good to go down at [8.2].

Will either of the sides be in the Championship next year? Tell us below...
