Aston Villa confirm imminent Pires arrival
There were rumours last month that former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires was contemplating joining non-league Crawley Town following his release from Villarreal at the end of last season but instead he'll be playing a whole four rungs up the ladder, with a move to Aston Villa imminent.
The signing of the former France international, who has been training with the Gunners to stay in shape and boost his chances of attracting the interest of a Premier League club, was confirmed by Villa number two Gary McAllister on their official website.
He said: "I know the boss and Arsene Wenger are very friendly and I believe he's going to join us in the next two or three days. It's perfect. I am sure he will arrive at the training ground in good condition. He's a player everyone can look up to because of what he has achieved."
Depending on how long it takes the 37-year-old to be considered ready for first-team duty, he may even make his Villans debut against the side whose supporters once voted him their sixth greatest player of all time at Villa Park on November 27.
What do you make of this addition, Villa fans? Pleased to have some experience to accompany the youth or could it halt their progress? Is it bad news for Stephen Ireland? Tell us below...
