Arsenal close to signing young left back

There were rumours on Tuesday that Gael Clichy will leave Arsenal this summer and the expectation of many Gunners supporters is that he would be replaced from within by Kieran Gibbs, just as they didn't need to splash the cash when Ashley Cole departed and instead allowed Clichy to succeed him.

The left back hierarchy at the Emirates appears set to continue too as the Daily Mirror are reporting that Arsene Wenger has already identified another future star in Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson, who has made eight appearances for the Addicks since Chris Powell's arrival as boss earlier this year.

The 19-year-old, who represents Finland Under-19s at international level despite being born in England, is also comfortable at right back and is expected to trade south London for north London at the end of the season in a deal that is likely to eventually cost Arsenal in excess of £1 million.

There is talk of him being loaned out to a lower league club in his first campaign after the switch to gain more experience. One thing that might encourage fans that criticise the lack of height in the Arsenal team and in particular at the back is that the teenager measures in at an impressive 6ft 1in.
