Arsenal 2-1 backers rewarded on Betfair

Not for the first time in his career, as Chelsea fans will confirm, David Villa scored the opening goal in a Champions League game against a Premier League team, only to eventually wind up on the losing team - but the Barcelona striker's misery was a reason to rejoice for a number of Betfair punters.

Anyone who stuck £10 on the tournament favourites falling to a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates, their first in the competition this season, on Betfair earned a massive £142.50 profit - even accounting for the maximum five per cent commission - while Victor Chandler customers received just a £100 prize.

The benefits of betting against other people was even clearer to see in Scunthorpe's shock 1-0 victory over promotion chasing Nottingham Forest in the Championship, their first at Glanford Park since August, returned £161.50 for a tenner, compared to a paltry £80 with Ladbrokes, Stan James and BetClic.

Another upset occurred on the continent as St Pauli triumphed 1-0 at the home of their illustrious neighbours Hamburg in almost certainly their finest moment since returning to the Bundesliga. A £10 wager on the popular cult club paid out £180.50 on Betfair, whereas Ladbrokes and Stan James bettors won only £80.

Don't take our word for it though, why not test Betfair yourself using Betchecker?
