Southampton starting to climb League One

Of the teams that started the weekend in the top eight of League One, Carlisle were the only ones to pick up three points, and Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield all took advantage with victories.

The trio were all among the pre-season title favourites, with the Owls and Terriers both leading at one stage before dropping down the table, and they are all now within four points of second-placed Carlisle after their successes this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield, whose 3-0 triumph away at previously unbeaten Colchester was probably Saturday's standout result, are fifth and sixth level on 17 points with Southampton just two points behind yet down in 13th after defeating Tranmere 2-0.

The Saints are hitting form under new boss Nigel Adkins, with the result marking the first time they've recorded consecutive wins in close to six months. They're now unbeaten in five games during which they've conceded only once.

The south coast club, who remain [4.1] frontrunners to finish first, still haven't been in the top half all season though and for that to change next week they will probably need to conquer the side closest to them in the betting, Huddersfield ([6.4]), at the Galpharm Stadium.

Will Adkins earn his third League One promotion in five years? Speculate below...
