Southampton raring to get going again
The Championship may have been grabbing all the headlines in recent days, with the move of Craig Bellamy to Cardiff, and the rumoured move of Edgar Davids to Crystal Palace, but in the lower levels of the English game, there's been plenty going on. Here's a round-up of events...
- Southampton boss Alan Pardew admits his side can't wait to get back to playing after having ten days without a game. He said: "When you get through pre-season, your first game, your first cup game and then to have ten days off, means we are crawling off the walls to get a game."
- Bournemouth striker Brett Pitman has rejected a move to Premier League new boys Blackpool after failing to agree terms. The 22-year-old made the trek to Blackpool on Thursday but was unable to iron out a deal, despite the two clubs agreeing a fee.
- Brighton boss Gus Poyet admits he needs to make new signings - and quickly. He said: "We've played two games and already it's as if we are in December. We've had two players sent off and a player out for six months, so we've got problems now."
- Brentford have boss Andy Scott is thrilled to land midfielder Nicky Adams from Championship side Leicester City. He said of the 23-year-old: "Nicky has a proven record at this level and I am delighted we have brought him on board."
- Southend United boss Paul Sturrock insists he will not be rushed into buying a striker. The Shrimpers boss admits he needs one more forward but is more than happy to take a player on loan. He said: "Everyone seems to think the market dies at the end of August, but there's still the loan period. I'm not going to bring in a striker for the sake of it."
Despite their less than brilliant start, are Southampton still the boys to beat in League One? Let us know what you think below...
