League One wide open after Sheff Wed slip

Is League One the new Championship? The pre-season promotion favourites are down in 18th, level with Dagenham and Redbridge, last season's play-off final losers Swindon and recently relegated Plymouth are in the relegation zone, and just three points separate the top 12 after five games.

Sheffield Wednesday were presented with an opportunity yesterday to make things far less exciting, as victory away to Brentford would have seen them open up an unheard of four-point lead less than a month into the campaign, however unpredictability reigned again as top were beaten by bottom.

It's all worked out quite well for the team we tipped for the title, Peterborough United ([9.4]), as despite an indifferent start in which they have lost two of their first five matches, they are just a point off first place because of the absence of a blistering pacesetter.

It's also good news for Southampton ([4.5]), whose controversial decision to axe Alan Pardew has so far failed to have a positive effect, with the south coast side losing twice at home this week, shipping five goals without reply.

They are six points off top spot with a game in hand and after rumours linking Paul Hart and Gianfranco Zola with the job failed to inspire Saints fans, the prospect of Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins dropping down a division to transform their fortunes is probably far more appealing.

Sheffield Wednesday remain slight title favourites at [4.4] but another slip next Saturday won't go unpunished, not least because they are hosting the club directly below them, unbeaten Carlisle. The Owls are [1.77] favourites.
