Leaders Sheff Wed at risk of points penalty

League One leaders Sheffield Wednesday could discover that everything they have worked for in the first five weeks of the season has been stripped from them as failure to resolve a £1.1 million tax bill in the next 24 hours will force the club into administration.

The ten-point penalty that the Owls would have to pay if they enter it would see their entire tally gained so far wiped out and instantly drop them from top of the table to bottom of the division.

And while it's a terrible thing for any set of supporters to suffer, as Saints fans know themselves, it could prove to be the best news struggling Southampton have had in a while, as the south coast side recently surrendered title favourites' status to Alan Irvine's men, but have now regained the tag.

Sheffield Wednesday have drifted to [4.6] to finish first, having been [4.2] before the news broke, while Southampton are in to [3.95] from [4.6].

The pacesetters can be laid to win the league at [5.3], yet risk takers could judge this the ideal time to back them, as BBC Radio Sheffield report that talks with the bank are ongoing, and if they avoid administration, they will enter a tricky run, which includes a Saints visit to Hillsborough, on an even greater high.

It appears that we're not alone in coming to that conclusion, as Sheffield Wednesday's title odds were even longer at one point earlier today, before moving in slightly to the current price of [4.6].

Will Sheffield Wednesday's financial problems derail their promotion push? Will an outsider take advantage if that does happen? Have your say below...
