Bet of the Day - Villarreal to beat Almeria
Day 184: We're backing Villarreal to win at Almeria at [1.92]
There's no denying that Villarreal have failed in recent months to live up to their spectacular start to the La Liga season, but with a top-four finish secured and a slim chance of overtaking neighbours Valencia to earn a spot straight in the Champions League group stage, they should finish on a high.
The Yellow Submarine have responded encouragingly to a 5-1 thumping in arguably the biggest match of their campaign, the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Porto, winning the return leg, overcoming Getafe and claiming a respectable point away to Real Mallorca.
They therefore appear rather underestimated at [1.92] to achieve their sixth travelling Liga triumph of 2010-11 against relegated Almeria, especially as they easily overcame the bottom club 2-0 in January at the one stage in which the southerners looked to stand a slight chance of staying up.
As it transpired, Almeria accepted the drop to the Segunda in the meekest manner imaginable, enduring a horror run of seven straight defeats during which they managed to find the net just twice, and losing the latter four games by an aggregate score of 7-0.
So while Villarreal's record in Almeria is poor, they are at least fighting, whereas their hosts offer the impression of having long ago thrown in the towel. They have lost seven of their eight clashes with the division's top five teams, and it's a brave punter that bets against that becoming eight in nine.
