Russia hit jackpot on crazy day in Group B

Our prediction that Armenia could cause problems for Slovakia came to pass on a baffling but ultimately brilliant matchday for Russia in Group B.

Republic of Ireland and Slovakia started the day joint-top of the group on six points, three clear of Russia who had lost at home to the latter, so Armenia's incredible 3-1 victory over a nation that reached the last 16 at the World Cup left the Boys in Green in a great position.

The Slovakia slip meant that a draw against Russia would have been enough for Giovanni Trapattoni's to open up a lead on their rivals for a spot at Euro 2012 yet, perhaps due in part to complacency, what followed was one of their worst performances under the Italian.

They were three down within 50 minutes and only managed to make the scoreline a far more respectable 3-2 when Robbie Keane went down easily in the box to win and net a cheap penalty that inspired a late fightback.

There were only two minor positives for the hosts - that Aiden McGeady, while not faultless, delivered his best international performance in close to three years, and that the recovery at the end ensures that they enter Tuesday's must-not-lose game in Slovakia with some momentum.

As Slovakia are hardly likely to be flying themselves after their shock in Armenia, Republic of Ireland should prove capable of getting back on track with a point in Zilina at [3.25], however unless they somehow take all three, this will be reflected on as a disappointing week.

Last night, Trapattoni's side had an opportunity to potentially put Russia out of contention for first place by defeating them. Instead, with Andrey Arshavin and co visiting Macedonia in midweek, it's not unthinkable that come Wednesday they will boast a clear lead at the top.

Have Ireland blown it? They're [3.6] to win the group, with Russia [1.6] favourites...
