Portugal want Mourinho in as interim boss

Portugal are planning an ambitious attempt to persuade Jose Mourinho to take charge of next month's Euro 2012 qualifying double header against Denmark and Iceland.

Carlos Queiroz was sacked last week, with his six-month ban for disrupting an anti-doping test a major factor in his dismissal, and it's almost integral that Portugal secure six points from their next two games after drawing with Cyprus and losing to Norway in their openers.

Portuguese Football Federation president Gilberto Madail has confirmed that they are seriously considering trying to bring in the Special One on a short-term basis, however he admits that "negotiations will be difficult".

Even if Mourinho was interested in helping dig his country out of a hole, it's difficult to see what benefit such an arrangement would have for his club Real Madrid, and why they would contemplate granting him permission.

Other names mentioned as contenders for the job include Spain's Euro 2008-winning coach Luis Aragones - whose candidacy has been backed by Mourinho, despite his preference for a Portuguese manager to be installed - and Diego Maradona.
