Andy Gray - why Capello doesn't pick Bent

The questions to Andy Gray have come thick and fast this week, both on Andy's Twitter account and the Betfair Football Facebook page. But the one that caught his eye was one about England's forgotten man, Darren Bent...

"Why do you think Fabio Capello continues to ignore England's best striker - Darren Bent?" - John Taylor

That's an excellent question John, and one I've wondered about myself.

Last season, Darren Bent scored 24 league goals for a team who finished 13th in the division. If that's not good enough to get you a place in England's World Cup squad then I don't know what is. Darren must now be wondering what he has to do this season for the England boss to deem him worthy of featuring in his plans.

It just seems to me like Fabio Capello doesn't like him as a player. Admittedly he's not easy on the eye and he can look a little clumsy and awkward at times. He also often seems to scuff the ball into the net rather than drilling it past the keeper like Wayne Rooney or Frank Lampard does.

But I'll say it again - he's a proven goalscorer and at any level of football it's about how many you score, not how you score them. Unfortunately for Bent, whilst Capello is in charge, he might find his chances of playing for England very limited. That's a shame for Darren and a loss for England because I certainly think he brings something to the table. I'd definitely have him as a permanent fixture in the squad and wouldn't think twice about starting him in the right circumstances.
