FC Twente to flop against Feyenoord again
PSV were probably surprised to go into the international break at the top of the Eredivisie after Ajax contrived to squander their advantage in the title race by dropping their first home league points since last August with a 2-1 loss to FC Utrecht, who were previously pointless on their travels.
It's shaping up to be a fascinating fight for first place this season, with summer predictions that PSV and Ajax were sure to dominate once again after FC Twente's championship-winning coach Steve McClaren followed Louis van Gaal to the Bundesliga appearing wide of the mark.
Yes, PSV and Ajax lead the way - and are frontrunners at [2.56] and [1.87] respectively in the betting - but just four points separate the top six (and six the top nine) with PSV on 18 points, Ajax on 17, FC Twente one further back on 16, FC Groningen and Roda JC next up on 15 and then NAC Breda on 14.
The table suggests that the most intriguing clash involving clubs near the top is the one pitting Ajax against NAC Breda, who after a dismal start are chasing a fifth victory in six. Home win odds of [1.21] show that Ajax aren't expected to slip again though, and that's a conclusion we agree with.
The standout tie in our eyes however is the one pitting struggling giants Feyenoord against unbeaten champions FC Twente. Feyenoord are two points above the drop zone, yet have won eight and drawn one of their last nine against FC Twente at De Kuip, so the visitors are a definite lay at [2.06].
PSV will almost certainly end the weekend where they start it, ahead of all challengers, when they make the short trip to Tilburg to face Willem II, who picked up their first point of the campaign a fortnight ago but regularly roll over for their neighbours. Fred Rutten's men are [1.26] to triumph.
