Ben Herd caught up with an old Aldershot chum this week

Ben Herd catches up with former Aldershot captain Adam Hinshelwood, now of Wycombe, to ask him about his season and the usual quickfire lifestyle questions...

"I am not one of those footballers that is going to say I would have played at this level or that, but let's just say injuries have definitely stopped me from progressing to the level I would have liked to have been playing."

For the third week running, our game has been postponed, which is usually bad enough, but last weekend's game was called off only a couple of hours before kick-off. That's not too bad usually but we had already travelled up to Darlington on the Friday! I think I spent about 14 hours on a boiling hot coach over the weekend! Suffice to say that I once again cannot interview an opposing player for betting.betfair.com. So, Instead, I thought I would catch up with Aldershot's recently departed captain, Adam Hinshelwood, now at Wycombe. "Hinsh" only joined "the Shots" last summer and was once again on his travels on the first day of the transfer window, rejoining his old manager, Gary Waddock, down at Wycombe. Here is what he had to say:

Were you surprised to be moving club again after only signing for Aldershot in the summer? How are you settling in with your new team mates?

It was a massive shock for Wycombe to have come knocking for me. I spoke to the manager at Aldershot (Kevin Dillon) on the Monday and he couldn't give me any real assurances about my future considering I only had six months to run on my deal. By the Friday, the deal was done and dusted with Wycombe and I am over the moon to be working with Gary Wadock again. The lads have made me feel very welcome and it's now just a case of getting ourselves out of trouble.

It's been a tough season for Wycombe so far, how do you see yourselves pulling away from the drop zone?

It has been a tough season for the lads and it might have affected one or two's confidence, but there is a real belief that we can stay up. The manager has set us a target of winning 10 out of the remaining 19 games. We have come off the back of playing the top three teams in the division; Leeds, Norwich and Charlton, and we have acquitted ourselves extremely well and deserved a bit more than we did out of those games. To be honest, those types of games are bonus games, it's now about getting results against teams around us and dragging them into it. One thing that is pleasing is the way the manager has not changed his philosophy on how the game should be played and I have no doubt we will play ourselves out of trouble.

You left Brighton after being at the club for nine years, was it a massive blow to have been released?

As any professional will tell you, it is never nice being told that your not wanted or deemed not good enough, but that's the nature of the game we are in. A new manager came in and spoke to me a couple of times before releasing me, so at least he was upfront and honest with me. It was always going to be difficult for me to have earned myself a new deal last season, because I had been injured on and off for the previous couple of years. Being at a club for so long can breed a bit of complacency, and looking back it was probably the best thing that has happened to me, fresh start and all that.

You mentioned your injury nightmare...after being involved in the England U21 setup early on in your career, do you feel injuries have curtailed your career so far?

I am not one of those footballers that is going to say I would have played at this level or that, but let's just say injuries have definitely stopped me from progressing to the level I would have liked to have been playing. Many of the lads involved with the England U21 team have gone on to establish themselves in either, The Championship or The Premier League, so who knows where I may have ended up.

Finally, is there any young prospects coming through at Wycombe we should be watching out for?

Yeah, there are a couple of decent wingers; young Matt Phillips and Kadeem Harris. They both have decent pace and good ability, but it will be down to them to make a name for themselves.
