Is it time for another big innings from MS Dhoni?
Is it time for another big innings from MS Dhoni?

The final match of the group stage sees tournament favourites Chennai take on Trinidad & Tobago, who need to avoid a heavy defeat in order to themselves qualify for the semi-finals. Richard O'Hagan previews the action.

"Darren Bravo is probably going to top score for T&T again. He’s got the added incentive of playing against brother Dwayne here, so it is hard not to follow him even at odds of only around 4.03/1"

Chennai Super Kings

There are times when the ICC Champions League is reminiscent of a much older contest - to be precise, the late, lamented, television series 'Robot Wars', in which plucky challengers would fight one another to destruction, with the winner then themselves doomed to defeat against the bigger and more powerful 'house robots'. Never was this more the case than in Group B, where Chennai have been utterly dominant and remain unbeaten, even with the advantage of playing on 'home' territory, while the sides from the rest of the world have struggled to compete against them.

Of course, a side captained by MS Dhoni and boasting Mike Hussey, Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina at the top of the batting order ought to go well, and it is understandable that this team are firm favourites to take the overall title. Only a heavy defeat here will stop them topping the group and on current form it is hard to see that happening.

Trinidad & Tobago

Denesh Ramdin's side showed that they have some steel to their spines in winning Monday's rain-affected match against the Titans. That has left them in pole position for the second qualifying spot from this group and they can even afford a narrow defeat and still make it to the semi-finals. That might be the danger here, as there is always a risk of complacency setting in if you know you can lose a game and still progress in a competition.

One particularly pleasing aspect of their win over the Titans was that opener Evin Lewis was their top scorer, taking some of the pressure to make runs from the shoulders of Darren Bravo. His opening partner, Lendl Simmons, recorded his second successive duck and could drop down the order, although his two wickets in that game probably did enough to save his place overall.

Venue and Conditions

This will be the first day of competition at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi. Judging from this year's IPL, a score of around 160 is par. Conditions should be warm and dry, with a cloudless night sky, so ideal for batting in an evening game.

Match Odds

Chennai are 1.4740/85 favourites, with Trinidad & Tobago trading at 2.91. Although there is not much value in betting the Super Kings, it is hard to see them losing this one, either.

Top Chennai Batsman

With so many stars to choose from, picking out which Chennai player is likely to perform best is a tricky one. The good aspect of that is that it does keep the odds market more fluid than it might otherwise be. We are getting towards the time of the competition where Dhoni likes to play one of his huge, grandstanding, innings and this is especially likely if Chennai lose a couple of quick early wickets. Back him at odds of around 4.57/2

Top Trinidad & Tobago Batsman

At the other extreme - and sadly for us - lightning probably isn't going to strike twice and Darren Bravo is probably going to top score for T&T again. He's got the added incentive of playing against brother Dwayne here, so it is hard not to follow him even at odds of only around 4.03/1

Recommended Bet:
Back Darren Bravo to be top Trinidad & Tobago batsman at 4.03/1 or better
