UK Snooker Championship Tips: Back this progressive trio to win their matches

Snooker player David Gilbert
David Gilbert now looks a contender at the very highest level

"Whilst the Iranian's talent was no secret to snooker regulars, it felt like a star was born on Sunday night as he trounced Mark Selby."

Back Hossein Vafaei 5u @ 2.01/1

Paul Krishnamurty previews his best three bets among the eight matches scheduled for Tuesday at the Barbican Theatre...

For Tuesday, as the round of last-32 concludes, my plan is once again a one unit treble. This time all the selections are to win their matches, for which the betting is tight. The common denominator is that in each case, I regard the selection to be improving fast.

Daily Treble (pays £8.01 to a £1 stake)

David Gilbert (vs Allen) @ 11/10
Zhou Yuelong (vs McGill) @ 10/11
Hossein Vafaei (vs Guodong) @ Evs

First up, David Gilbert to beat Mark Allen. My initial eight-strong outright betting plan has been in trouble ever since Neil Robertson bit the dust but hope springs eternal with 'The Angry Farmer'. I firmly believe he has a triple crown, or at least a run to a final, in him.

Gilbert's form this season is superior

Since winning the Championship League, Gilbert has only lost four matches. To Mark Selby in a decider at the Champion of Champions - match he should have won. To Yan Bingtao 4-2 and John Higgins 5-3 - matches he could easily have won, and in which defeat was no disgrace. And in a decider to Gary Wilson in the British Open quarter-final.

Whilst Allen did win the Northern Ireland Open, playing superbly, he remains under a massive cloud off the table. He withdrew from the Champion of Champions and only confirmed this appearance at the last moment, saying since that one bad call from his lawyer could result in withdrawal.

Allen is a master break-builder and that performance is a guide to his well-being. He hasn't hit a 70 in either match so far, and should really have lost to Joe O'Connor. I do not make him the favourite here, so take the 11/10 about Gilbert as a single too.

Yuelong poised for another strong UK bid

Zhou Yuelong's run to the semis here last year was the pinnacle of his short career but there is much, much more to come. I fancy him to reach the top-16 this season and stay there for the foreseeable future. In the previous round, he won the last six frames after losing the first two to Anthony Hugill.

He's taken to beat Anthony McGill, who has his own triple crown pedigree but doesn't have anything like the scope for improvement. The Scot has suffered several bad defeats this season that don't instil confidence.

Vafaei a must-bet after claiming Selby scalp

For the final leg, Hossein Vafaei very much appeals at even money to beat Xiao Guodong. Whilst the Iranian's talent was no secret to snooker regulars, it felt like a star was born on Sunday night as he trounced Mark Selby.

I firmly believe he can go all the way to the top, whereas Guodong has likely reached his level already. Again, I think the betting is the wrong way round here so take the even money as a single.
