Tuesday's best bet involves the match between the Pistol and Hitman, in which Paul Krishnamurty is confident Mark Allen can sustain his early form and beat the handicap...
"Of the 12 frames Allen won in the last two rounds, 11 included a fifty-plus break. That sort of scoring will always be too hot for a player like Holt"
Amongst a mixed bag of early performances from the leading candidates at this year's UK Championship, one that did stand out during the second round came from Mark 'Pistol' Allen. Already advised pre-tournament at 17.016/1, Allen cued superbly when easily brushing the tricky Dave Harold aside 6-3 and is fancied to progress just as comprehensively against Michael 'Hitman' Holt.
Holt isn't the easiest opponent in the world but he's always been short of the highest tier in snooker. Allen very much belongs in that sphere and has every chance of at least emulating his run to the final two years ago. In truth, he is a much better player nowadays and has seemed under the market radar all year. Two recent PTC wins show he's arrived in form in perfect time for the season's first major.
Of the 12 frames Allen won in the last two rounds, 11 included a fifty-plus break. That sort of scoring will always be too hot for a player like Holt or indeed anyone outside the elite. The best plan is to take 1.910/11 that Allen successfully concedes the handicap and wins by 6-3 or better.
