As has so often proved the case on the opening day of big snooker events in the past, Saturday's highlight was a massive upset, with world champion Mark Selby downed 6-4 by promising Irish player David Morris.
Day two includes a similar batch of games that appear one-sided on paper, although identifying another upset is not obvious. Rather than looking for one, my advice is to back a treble on three red-hot favourites, whose combined odds amount to exactly even money.
So far as the draw is concerned, the main beneficiary from Selby's elimination is Shaun Murphy, who is now strong favourite to win the bottom quarter. His next opponent is journeyman Robin Hull and it is extremely hard to see anything other than an easy Murphy win.
Shaun was in superb form when winning last week's Ruhr Open, hitting a 147 in the final against Robert Milkins to land his second PTC title of the season. That standard is in another stratosphere to anything Hull has ever achieved. I cannot recall the Finn beating a top player but a study of his career record shows he apparently beat John Higgins once, 11 years ago.
Equally, Ben Woollaston looks nailed-on to get past veteran Tony Drago. Again, it requires a long memory to recall Drago being competitive in a ranking event. Moreover, the promising, heavy scorer Woollaston is pretty effective against lesser opposition and has a nasty habit of running into top players. This term his progress has been halted by O'Sullivan, Trump, Allen and last week runner-up Rob Milkins.
Finally by far the toughest leg of the treble, but Michael White is nevertheless fancied to get past another veteran, Ken Doherty. Given Ken's experience and nous, one might have expected a youngster like White to have trouble against him, but the Welshman has won three of their four encounters. As argued in the main preview, this top prospect is in form and a good outside bet for the title.
