And they're off... The first FE season begins on Saturday so, if you want to know what it's all about and how you can bet on it, then read on...

In this inaugural season, ten one hour races will take place in cities around the world this season, beginning in Beijing on Saturday and ending in London next June.

There's no Formula 1 Grand Prix to get stuck in to but this weekend could still be momentous for motor racing as the first Formula E championship gets underway.

Betfair is running markets on all the races, including Saturday's ePrix in Beijing, as well as on the Drivers' Championship.

Formula E involves environmentally friendly electric cars which could mark the beginning of motor racing's move away from combustion engines.

In this inaugural season, ten one hour races will take place in cities around the world this season, beginning in Beijing on Saturday and ending in London next June.

The competition is FIA approved and organisers have managed to attract big names, from inside and outside the motor racing world, to Formula E.

The most famous of these is Leonardo Di Caprio, who is the team boss of Venturi. The Wolf of Wall Street star is a keen environmentalist and motor sport fan so he and FE are the perfect match.

The most illustrious player meanwhile is four time F1 champion Alain Prost who co-owns e.dams-Renault team and whose son Nicholas will race for them.

Will Prost junior be as successful in FE as his dad was in Grand Prix? He'll have to go some, especially with Bruno Senna as well as former-F1 drivers Nelson Piquet and Nick Heidfeld on the grid.

It remains to be seen whether FE will capture the imaginations of racing fans but, with so much buzz and investment behind the new venture, Saturday's race is an intriguing prospect.
