British star's run of consecutive Drivers' Championship wins looks set to end at four as bettors back Verstappen for title says Max Liu...
Verstappen is 1.282/7 to win the Drivers' Championship and 32 points ahead of Hamilton in the standings after nine races.
The odds on Lewis Hamilton winning a fifth Drivers' Championship in a row drifted to 4.57/2 after Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Verstappen is 1.282/7 in the outright betting and 32 points ahead of Hamilton in the standings after nine races.
Verstappen rarely looked uncomfortable as he pulled off a pole to flag victory. It was his fifth race win of 2021.
While Hamilton has the ability to make up the gap - with 32 points going to the winner of a Grand Prix - the state of his Mercedes car may put bettors off backing him. He has not won for five races, since the Spanish Grand Prix at the beginning of May.
Hamilton plays down British GP chances
After yesterday's race, in which he finished fourth, Hamilton played down his chances of winning the British Grand Prix on 18 July.
He said: "We have a little bit (of upgrades) coming but it's not going to close the gap enough, so we've got to do some more work."
Hamilton is tied with Michael Schumacher on seven championships apiece - the joint record of any driver in history - but bettors think the Brit will have to wait for his eighth.
Mercedes are hard at work on their 2022 car so this season appears to be a transitional one for them, although team principal Toto Wolff has denied they would write of this season.
They have won the last seven Constructors' Championships but they are 4.03/1 for 2021 with Red Bull, for whom Verstappen drivers, trading at 1.3130/100.
Hamilton's struggles have also affected his chances in the Sports Personality of the Year betting. The two-time winner, who took the award last year, is out to 17.5 in the Exchange market.
