Wayne Mardle on the World Championships: Daryl to dazzle

Wayne Mardle gets stuck into two of Sunday's match-ups at the World Championships...

"The head-to-head stands at 3-0 to Daryl and I think that'll be tonight's scoreline as Daryl defeats his opponent for a fourth time."

Mark Webster v Joe Murnan

Webby, as he's affectionately known, is a class act. The 2008 BDO world champ has had his problems in recent years, sometimes struggling to let go of the darts. It's a fear of missing that paralyses the arm, locking it, making him unable to propel the dart forward. Mark has somehow carried on playing at such a high level, the fact he's still able to compete tells you a lot about the man.

The odds today aren't that favourable - 4/6 for Webby to prevail -but I'm going to look a bit deeper. I think he'll win comfortably.

Although, Joe won a match on debut here last year when beating Andy Hamilton, he really struggled to get over the line.

Joe's performances on the big stage aren't great, he's never been beyond the last 32 in any big stage event, this will be his tenth attempt to improve on that record.

I believe Webby is a far better player on the main stage than in run of the mill Tour events, he's a big stage player, whilst Murnan thrives when there are no steps to navigate. The head to head may stand at 3-3 but I'll take Webby with the handicap.

I think there is also some value to be found in the highest finish market tonight- between them, Mark and Joe haven't had a finish over 116 on the big stage all year. Mark has played 83 legs, Joe has played only 17 legs.

Daryl Gurney v Jermaine Wattimina

This is clear cut to me. Gurney is a just a better player than Jermaine and he should go through untroubled.
Any outcome is possible of course, but Daryl has to have a darting disaster to lose this,

Jermaine hasn't won a game at Ally Pally yet. On the two occasions he has played in the world championships he's lost at the fist hurdle, in a preliminary game and then to Mensur Suljovic. He failed to qualify last year.

Daryl is close to becoming a real threat to all, he has the talent and skills, it's just whether he can up his game at the right times like the house-hold names of the sport. Daryl is currently ranked 24th in the world, his talent should allow him to climb in the next few years.

In my opinion, Jermaine will need to produce a performance like never before on the big stage to deal with Daryl.
The normal level of play between these two players is quite different. Daryl's stats suggest he's a better scorer and finisher than Wattimena. That'll do for me. I'm on.

The head-to-head stands at 3-0 to Daryl and I think that'll be tonight's scoreline as Daryl defeats his opponent for a fourth time.
