Wayne is backing Phil Taylor to do 'a proper job' on Gerwyn Price on Sunday night

Two sessions of darts at the World Matchplay in Blackpool on Sunday and here with his thoughts and recommended bets on both is our man Wayne Mardle...

"I'm taking Phil to do a proper job here. Let's be honest, he's still the better player of the two, in fact he's still one of the top six in the world in my opinion."

Jelle klaasen v Justin Pipe

I feel for Jelle. He was playing brilliantly, he earned a Premier League spot, was working his way up the rankings, and then disaster. A wrist injury has caused pain and grief. He has now had it operated on, but now it's the process of getting back to fighting fit. If there's any doubt or niggling pain it'll be incredibly difficult to play well.

There have been a few matches recently where Jelle just hasn't looked comfortable at all.

Over a long format like best of 19, I'm a little worried for him. I assume he's been having long practice sessions that will help. I feel it's time he needs, not practice.

Justin Pipe hasn't been on the radar when it comes to a potential semi finalist or finalist for some time now. He's still playing well enough to qualify for huge events but isn't the danger he once was. All that said, at 2-1, he's massively over priced.

Justin is very good at making a player work hard, just what Jelle doesn't want.

Klaasen's last few performances over shorter formats have yielded averages between 77 and 88, that will not be good enough here.

Robert Thornton v Cristo Reyes

Reyes is massively improved.

Playing the best players in the world week in, week out, has clearly had an inspiring effect on him. He's now a threat to anyone. He proved that by nearly taking MVG all the way in the World Championship, in that match Reyes lost with an average of 106. Mind boggling!

Robert just hasn't been the same player since he won the Grand Prix back in October 2015. I know he's had some health issues, that and a loss of form has caused a long dip.

Robert is a player that needs to believe. I'm not convinced right now he's in the best frame of mind. His record at the Winter Gardens is appalling. Robert has lost in the first round on six occasions.

Phil Taylor v Gerwyn Price
Sunday, 20:00
Live on Sky Sports

It's quite possible that this could be the last ever match Phil Taylor plays at the Winter Gardens, here in Blackpool. The Power is retiring after the World Championship in January 2018.

The 15-time champion of the World Matchplay would love to go out with a bang. He's made it clear that this tournament is his favourite. He feels more emotion here than any other.

Gerwyn Price is the man The Power has to face in the first round.

It'd be fair to say both players aren't playing their best. For whatever reason, Gerwyn's mean average has dipped recently, that'll bother him.

Phil is still difficult to beat, you can't play mediocre and beat the most successful darts player in living history. Price is going to have to play near his best to get anything from this match.

The pair have only met once, back in 2015, Taylor won 6-2.

While it may have no baring to some, this would bother me, Price's last stage match which was just over a week ago, was a 8-0 hiding at the hands of Michael van Gerwen. Confidence can't be high, can it?

I'm taking Phil to do a proper job here. Let's be honest, he's still the better player of the two, in fact he's still one of the top six in the world in my opinion.
