Wayne Mardle on the World Championship: Defending champ to win with ease

Defending champions Gary Anderson is expected to open with a comfortable win tonight

The PDC World Championship commences at Alexandra Palace on Thursday night with defending champion Gary Anderson in action, and our man Wayne Mardle is expecting him to start his defence with a resounding win...

"For Gary Anderson to lose this he will have be out of sorts to some tune, and Mark to be better than he's ever been before on the big stage."

The first match of the championship is between two players who will both feel they have the beating of each other, that normally creates a close game.

I personally think Kevin Painter is a better player than Jamie. But that has to be proven for us to get off to a winning start.

Jamie saves his bets darts for the lesser events that are played in sports halls, they are vastly different in atmosphere from the big stages. Kevin is the opposite, get Painter in front of the cameras and he comes alive. Painter is a showman.

Jamie reached the last 16 a year ago, but he's nowhere near in that form now, we know form comes a goes. In his last four big events he has lost in the first round every time. The pressure just mounts and you try not to lose, that in it's self hinders your chances of winning.

Head to head. One meeting this year went to Caven 6-4, but hopefully tonight will see a different outcome.

Like I said, I think Kevin is the batter darts player of the two, with a lot more winning experience.

Gary Anderson v Mark Frost

Live on Sky Sports 1

The twice and reigning champ, going for the 'Threepeat'.

I've known Mark Frost for decades, he's always been a decent player but not good enough to sustain the level to trouble Gary, I think.

This will be Mark's debut in this event, for a man competing all over the world since the mid 1990s, that's quite unusual. He's played in the World Matchplay and UK Open before, so he's experienced.

For Gary Anderson to lose this he will have be out of sorts to some tune, and Mark to be better than he's ever been before on the big stage.

Frost has not averaged above 87 in all his years playing on TV.

Reading that back, it sounds a tad brutal to Mark, but I really do not see a way for him to win this match.

Any outcome is possible, no matter how unlikely it may seem, I know that! But I just don't see it here.
