Wayne Mardle is back with a preview of Mervyn King's first round encounter with Max Hopp...
"Mervyn King is right up there with the best of them, he's a real tough player to beat and he plays the game the way I think it should be played."
Mervyn King V Max Hopp
When Max made his world championship debut in 2013 he looked like someone who could well do very well out of the sport, he's fast, fluent and clearly has ability, but unfortunately he's been a bit slow in progressing to the next level. He's a very good youth player but seems to struggle to dominate any matches on the main tour.
And I'm not sure he's ready to try and deal with the big hitters of the sport just yet.
Mervyn King is right up there with the best of them, he's a real tough player to beat and he plays the game the way I think it should be played - picks up his darts and throws them. There's no games up there with Mervyn, if he loses it's because he's been outplayed, if he wins its because he was better than his opponent on the day. He never tries to complicate things.
For Max to concern Mervyn at all he'll need to score well, King's double hitting is normally very good so I can't see him giving Hopp another chance to win legs and sets.
King knows he's the better player, and after the year he's had Mervyn has to think he can not just win this match but win plenty more and maybe go all the way.
Back Mervyn King to win 3-0 at 2.255/4
