Wayne Mardle's Grand Slam Tips: Back Jackpot to do the business

Adrian Lewis should be able to get past Michael Smith
Adrian Lewis should be able to get past Michael Smith

Wayne's back and looking ahead to tonight's big match up between Adrian Lewis and Michael Smith...

"I'm of the opinion that if Adrian Lewis can impose himself early on in the contest he could unsettle Michael. In the previous round Chizzy just let Michael play and I think that was an error, Smith's best performances over the last twelve months have been against the quicker players who've let him find his rhythm."

Michael Smith finds himself in a major ranking quarter final for the first time, he's the world number eight and he's on the up. There's no doubt he'll be high on confidence, and given the performance he put in against Dave Chisnall in the previous round he'll no doubt feel that winning this tournament isn't beyond him.

Smith's natural ability is up there with MVG, Gary Anderson and tonight's opponent Adrian Lewis but, what's been in question, is his resolve.

Michael was giving in far too easy against Phil Taylor last year - he went behind and gave up, became a non-trier and the result became a foregone conclusion, he lost 16-3. To date that's his only match over this long format.

I'm of the opinion that if Adrian Lewis can impose himself early on in the contest he could unsettle Michael.
In the previous round Chizzy just let Michael play and I think that was an error, Smith's best performances over the last twelve months have been against the quicker players who've let him find his rhythm. He's averaged over 100 against MVG, Terry Jenkins, RVB, Mervyn King, Stephen Bunting & Lewis.

Adrian played well in his win over Peter Wright, mistakes were at a minimum and his doubling was accurate, and I think he's likely to reproduce a similar standard this evening. He didn't look stretched at all last time out.

There was a little bit of needle in the match and that seemed to flick Jackpot's switch, Adrian knows what it takes to win a match of this length and he'll deal with the ups and downs as they happen, I'm not so sure of Smith in this department, his emotions seem to affect him negatively occasionally.

In summary, With so little to choose between them on ability it's going to be the one who remains the strongest mentally, and that'll be Lewis. Like I alluded to, Lewis needs impose himself early, but if he does I think this has the potential to be a pretty clinical win.
