Wayne Mardle's Grand Slam Tips: Back Taylor to Power past Jenkins

Phil Taylor should breeze past Terry Jenkins
Phil Taylor should breeze past Terry Jenkins

We're into the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts, with eight players in action tonight and the remainder tomorrow. Wayne Mardle focuses his attention on Phil Taylor's clash with Terry Jenkins and is backing the Power to win in style...

"In his last ten matches on the big stage Taylor has averaged 102 per every three darts thrown."

The Power, who has won this prestigious event on six occasions and is looking to retain it for the third year, played beautifully in his opening two group games against Martin Phillips and Robbie Green.

But, in his third match against Rowby-John Rodriguez, Phil looked more relaxed than usual and admitted in the post match interview that he found it hard to concentrate knowing he was already through to the knockout out phase of the competition. Urgency is required at all times in this sport.

In his last ten matches on the big stage Taylor has averaged 102 per every three darts thrown.

Terry Jenkins qualified for the last 16 with just one win in from the group stages, against Geert De Vos. He found top gear against Robert Thornton and led 4-2, but then he contracted 'finish line-itus', missing match darts in two of the last three legs. If he'd converted one of those chances he'd be playing Robbie Green instead of the 16-time champion of the world.

Taylor will be more consistent than Terry, his standard of play is as nearly high as ever but what has changed is the infrequency of hitting three dart combination out-shots.

If Phil is hitting the two and three dart out-shots I don't see a way for Terry to trouble The Power. With the match odds prohibitive at just 1/10, back Taylor to beat the 3.5 leg handicap.
