Wayne Mardle on the World MatchPlay: Back Smith to end Pipe's dream

Will Justin Pipe fail at the first stage against Michael Smith?
Will Justin Pipe fail at the first stage against Michael Smith?

It's day two of the World Matchplay from Blackpool and our man Wayne Mardle has a few recommended bets for you to consider, including one featuring one of his pre-tournament picks...

"Whilst I know the pace that Justin plays isn't ideal for Michael to play his very best (though Michael has won the last four meetings) I think he'll over power the man from Taunton with some excellent scoring, a bit Chizzy like, giving himself chances at doubles."

Back Smith to beat Pipe @ 1.784/5

Dave Chisnall v Dean Winstanley

When he's on his game Chizzy is a threat to anyone, with his capability to score as high as the very best he'll always give himself chances, and this for me is a match that he will win with that power scoring.

Dean hasn't been in particularly great form, however he did reach a Tour final back in March. When he is confident he throws with a swagger but when under pressure he tends to hold on to the dart a bit too long and starts dragging the darts downward. He must try and combat that to win this match as Dave will most definitely outscore him.

I can see Chizzy giving himself plenty of opportunities to break Dave's throw and I expect him to do so a few times at least.

Recommended Bet
Back Chisnall to win 10-6 @ 8.07/1 or better

Justin Pipe v Michael Smith

I've always been a fan of Justin, his work ethic is something a lot of players could learn by, he lives right and he practices religiously to make sure his game is as good as it can be. You've got to admire that.

Michael Smith has already had some fantastic results in the world of darts but I think this young man is just starting, already twice a winner on Tour, he's also hit a nine-darter and to add to that he's beaten the master Phil Taylor in the World Championships.

Whilst I know the pace that Justin plays isn't ideal for Michael to play his very best (though Michael has won the last four meetings) I think he'll over power the man from Taunton with some excellent scoring, a bit Chizzy like, giving himself chances at doubles.

I'm not underestimating Pipe here but given I put up Smith in my pre-tournament preview then I'm confident the youngster has the quality to prevail.
