Wayne Mardle's World Championship Tips: Barney to push MVG as tournament hots up

Wayne Mardle's strongest bet of the tournament landed yesterday meaning our man has rattled off three successive winning tips. Today Wayne fancies an easy victory for Michael Smith and a bit of a battle for the world number one...

"In their recent meetings, three of the last four have gone to at least the penultimate leg. In this 'sets' format it means we need Barney to win at least two sets against Michael, and a price of 11/10 about him doing so is extremely fair."

I'm a fan of Michael Smith and the ability he possesses, add to that he's developed a grit and determination that's needed to succeed in any sport. Over the last year he's matured into a potential winner on the big stage.

Smith's semi-final showing at the Grand Slam of Darts last month was a warning shot that there's more of the same to come.

Benito himself is making huge strides in the sport. The likeable Dutchmen is a good player but his action isn't the greatest under pressure and I'm pretty sure he'll be under the kosh for large chunks of this match.

Michael's scoring should be far too heavy for the inconsistent Van de Pas.

I see this being one way traffic. So far Benito has only hit four maximums to Smith's 11, Benito's highest finish has been 108 in both matches while Michael has had a 140 and a 134.

I think Smith will win nicely, and will back him to do the Win/Most 180s/Highest Checkout treble at 6/5.

Michael van Gerwen v Raymond van Barneveld

I'm not going to go into some long spiel about this match. We know the players and I'm not going to pick holes in MVG saying he's going to lose for one reason or another.

The reason I'm backing RVB is that the price is wrong, Raymond should be a 3/1 shot in my opinion.

The bet is the +2.5 Handicap. In their recent meetings, three of the last four have gone to at least the penultimate leg. In this 'sets' format it means we need Barney to win at least two sets against Michael, and a price of 11/10 about him doing so is extremely fair.
