Wayne Mardle's Premier League Tips: Underestimated Barney to win again

Raymond van Barneveld is unbeaten in hs last nine Premier League round-robin matches
Raymond van Barneveld is unbeaten in hs last nine Premier League round-robin matches

Wayne Mardle made the perfect start to his Premier League tipping exploits with two winners from two selections last Thursday, and this week our man fancies a Premier League stalwart, as well as a debutant, to land the spoils in Newcastle...

"Of his last nine league phase matches Raymond has won seven and drawn two, his standard of play is so high on a regular basis that his price of 7/4 to beat Peter Wright has to be wrong."

Michael Smith v Robert Thornton

On the opening night of fixtures last week in Leeds both Michael and Robert weren't at their best - I'm being a bit kind there I think, they were poor - and unusually so.

Even in the embryonic stages of this year's Premier League they will feel that this is a must win game.

Michael played twice last week and lost them both heavily, whilst Robert in his match against Dave Chisnall, registered the lowest average ever recorded in the PL, 75.68 and lost 7-0 to boot.

Robert's confidence is understandably low, at the weekend he played in three events and lost in the first round twice... that's not the form normally shown by the world number seven.

Smith must feel that this is a great chance to get two points on the board and remove himself from the foot of the table.

Michael didn't play well last week at all, in fact he looked unsettled for most of the evening but, he'll feel a little better after playing some very decent stuff at the weekend, reaching two quarter-finals in three events played.

I know that the events away from the big stage are so so different from the Premier League arenas but none the less they can act as confidence boosters.

I'm positive that Smith will play better in Newcastle this week, whilst I can see Thornton struggling again.

Peter Wright v Raymond van Barneveld

Another Premier League starts and yet again the big Dutchman is overpriced and underestimated. Of his last nine league phase matches Raymond has won seven and drawn two, his standard of play is so high on a regular basis that his price of 7/4 to beat Peter Wright has to be wrong.

The spoiler here is the draw but I'm confident that the five time world champion will do a job on Snakebite and win us some loot.

Wright is playing some fantastic darts, but this is a price based punt, I'd have expected Raymond's odds to be nearer evens.

Both players got off to winning starts, Wright beating Michael Smith and Raymond beating his old adversary Phil Taylor, I expect a high quality game.

For your information, RVB has made the play-offs on eight occasions, highlighting his liking for the Premier League format.
