Wayne Mardle's Premier League Darts Tips: Back Taylor to prevail in must-win match

Phil Taylor needs a win over Gary Anderson in Newcastle on Thursday night
Phil Taylor needs a win over Gary Anderson in Newcastle on Thursday night

It's crunch time for Phil Taylor with the six-time Premier League champion needing a victory over current World Champion Gary Anderson to keep alive his slim hopes of qualifying for the play-offs at the O2. Wayne Mardle previews Thursday night's action from Newcastle...

"If Phil can assert himself early I believe Gary may struggle to find his range, thus handing the mental battle to The power."

Phil Taylor v Gary Anderson
Thursday, 21:10

The world has gone mad, Phil Taylor, the greatest darts player the world has ever seen may not qualify for the Premier League play-offs in London in a little over two weeks from now.

Phil needs to win his remaining games but he will need to rely on other results going his way too.

All The Power can do is start off by beating the current World Champion Gary Anderson who is three points ahead of Phil in the table. But a defeat for Anderson to the six-time Premier League winner would mean that we go down to the very last night of the 16-week season to find out who will be fighting it out in London at the O2.

Gary let a lead slip last week against Raymond Van Barneveld, he looked in control, then a couple of miscounts seemed to affect him, he lost his cool and the match.

There is a possibility that the Scotsman could feel a little unsettled after last week's unsavoury scenes in which he accused RVB of gamesmanship.

Taylor knows that only a win will do and I personally think he'll get it. The greatest has played some incredible darts but he's also produced spells of unusual mediocrity, that's why he's fifth in the league and not higher.

If Phil can assert himself early I believe Gary may struggle to find his range, thus handing the mental battle to The power.

Adrian Lewis v Michael van Gerwen
Thursday, 20:30

Michael is a rarity, winning the league basis isn't enough for him, he wants to better his points tally from last year (24), the urgency has never relented.

Urgency is what hinders Adrian Lewis annually in the Premier League, he's said it time and again that he only feels the urgency in knock-out tournaments. Last year that became evident, during the Premier League he played average for his limitless skill, then won the UK Open before resuming to play average again in the league.

Lewis cannot qualify for the play-offs so therefore I don't think he wins this match.

MVG's form isn't worth discussing, he's always on form.
