Phil Taylor has endured a nightmare start to this year's Premier League, suffering two heavy defeats in successive weeks, but Wayne Mardle believes now is the time to back the 16-time world champion when he faces Peter Wright on Thursday...
"He hasn't played anywhere near as well as he is capable but Phil is still somehow averaging 98, it's just his doubling stats that are dismal, just below 19%. That's not good enough, but I'm positive that will improve."
Peter Wright v Phil Taylor
The Power has been massively under par so far in this Premier League, suffering two heavy defeats, albeit at the hands of two of the best players in the world at the moment in Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis.
But surely Taylor's form can't continue. At least I don't think it can. He hasn't played anywhere near as well as he is capable but Phil is still somehow averaging 98, it's just his doubling stats that are dismal, just below 19%. That's not good enough, but I'm positive that will improve.
Now, my selection is Taylor to beat Peter Wright. The reasons being that I can't see Taylor playing so poorly again, and Wright struggled last week and confidence will not be high.
I think Taylor is very backable and the price is too tempting to turn down.
Selection: Back Taylor to Win @ 1.728/11
Raymond van Barneveld v Simon Whitlock
Another man looking to get back to winning ways and get some points on the board is RVB. I'm going to count Barney's slip-up against Wes Newton last week as just one of those bad days at the office.
The big Dutchman looked out of sorts and played poorly and that can happen to anyone on any given day. But I'm not expecting a similar performance in Dublin. Barney will want to get back to winning ways and against Simon Whitlock he has a super chance to do just that.
Simon has been underperforming for a few months now and having lost his opening two games he is a man under pressure to get some points on the board as soon as possible if he wants to avoid elimination after week nine.
The Wizard is more than capable of a big performance, but from what we've seen in the Premier League so far he will have to improve to beat Barney and I'm wagering that he won't.
Selection: Back Van Barneveld to Win @ 1.84/5
