Premier League Darts: MVG to set the pace with victory over Taylor

The world's top two face off in a mouthwatering week one clash
The world's top two face off in a mouthwatering week one clash

The darts extravaganza that is the Premier League gets up and running again on Thursday in Liverpool with some tasty fixtures, including the Power versus MVG. Wayne Mardle picks out the best bets for week one...

"Phil has changed equipment yet again which could be a major factor. Yes, he'll have been practising with the new darts for months now but there's nothing like the pressure of a match to find you out. Phil will be the more nervous out of the two players, so it's MVG to win for me."

Recommended Bet:
Back Michael van Gerwen to win at 2.47/5

Phil Taylor v Michael van Gerwen
21:10

One of these men is the world number one, reigning Premier League champion, Players champion and World champion - to think that's not Phil Taylor is unheard of!

Michael is the favourite for the whole event - and my pick to win - but the Betfair market can't split them for this match.

MVG is holding all the aces right now but things can change quickly in darts and a good start from the Power could see him getting off to a flyer.

Simon Whitlock v Adrian Lewis
21:50

Simon has not been at his consistent best over the last year or so. Even though he had a good run to the World Championship semi-finals I don't think he's take any confidence from it given that he lost to a man ranked 12 places below him in Peter Wright. He also just avoided elimination last year's Premier League.

The 'beard to be feared' needs to hit the ground running, not just for points but for confidence as when's he quick and fluent he's brutal to play, but when he thinks about it he's vulnerable.

Adrian Lewis on the other hand has played beautifully over the last seven months; some of the matches against Taylor and Van Gerwen last year were a delight and he seems to play his best darts when up against it.

Jackpot's Premier League campaign never really got off the ground last year but this times it's different, he seems more focused, relaxed and confident.

He took a battering off Van Gerwen in the worlds but, if you consider how many darts were missed at double I don't think that'll bother him at all. The two-time world champion can win anything - he is a joy to watch at times - and I'll be surprised if he doesn't get off to a winning start against Simon.

Wayne Mardle P/L

If you had placed £10 on each of our darts columnist's recommendations during the World Championships you would have emerged with a profit of £133 (before commission). Tips included Michael van Gerwen to win pre-tournament at 4.9 and a 8.0 correct score tip on the final as MVG beat Peter Wright 7-4.
