Premier League Darts Night 16 Tips: Four players battle for last two play-off spots

Rob Cross could become only the third player to top the league stage

After 16 weeks of darts, it's all to play for in Leeds. Rob Cross is on the verge of denying MVG as four fight for two remaining play-off spots at The o2. James Buttler calls the shots...

"This is a terrific match to end the league stage of the tournament. Assuming MVG wins, a success for Rob Cross sees him top the table after 16 weeks of consistently great arras. He will trouser a cheque for £25,000 and become only the third table-topper after Phil Taylor and MVG."

Price is right against wayward Snakebite

Gerwyn Price v Peter Wright

Why is Gerwyn Price 13/10 ahead of this game against a Peter Wright who has been out of form and contention for most of this tournament? It makes no sense and is a must play bet. The Welshman realistically needs to win, although a draw may be enough, to advance his current sixth place and take his points tally to 18. Even that might not be enough. But the message is he will be playing to land that 13/10 and to put pressure on his rivals in the later games.

Price missed a dart to take the match last week against Daryl Gurney and it could be a costly arrow. But on recent evidence bottom of the table Peter Wright is not at his best and has his head elsewhere. Wright was battered 8-1 by MVG last week, but did hit the most 180s to land us a nice 16/5 shot. It's impossible to back a Snakebite that has lost his last five matches.

Price win the reverse fixture 7-5 and this should be a routine victory. Although there are no dead rubbers in Leeds, the gauntlet will have been thrown down and the spotlight turned to the other play-off contenders Wade, Suljovic and Gurney.

Best Bet: Back Gerwyn Price to beat Peter Wright @ 13/10 (1 unit)

Superchin has a great chance to put nose in front

Daryl Gurney v Michael Smith

Daryl Gurney begins the evening on 17 points and in fifth spot. He's level on points with fourth-placed Mensur Suljovic and a point behind James Wade. If Gerwyn Price has collected two points in the opening match of the night, Gurney will need to win to give himself a chance of The 02. Gurney showed his fighting spirit by battling hard to get a draw against Price last week.

Michael Smith has been a serious disappointment this season. He was my pick to follow his great form at the World Championships with a good Premier League run. It never came and with only three wins from 15 matches he has long since been an also-ran.

Gurney has described 'Bully Boy' as a "sleeping giant" this week and the truth is he's been snoring loudly. Taking a point from the in-form James Wade last week was an excellent result for Smith, but he hasn't recorded a win since round 8. Gurney is 7/5 to take the win and that seems a punt well worth having.

Best Bet: Back Daryl Gurney to beat Michael Smith @ 7/5 (1 unit)

MVG looking to put pressure on leader cross with Mensur win

Michael van Gerwen v Mensur Suljovic

Live on Sky Sports Darts

This match means a lot to both players. Michael van Gerwen's O2 place is confirmed but he has topped the league in his six previous Premier League seasons, since 2013, and will want to keep that unblemished record and pocket the $25,000 on offer. If he is going to top the table he either needs a win, or a draw would be enough if Cross loses the last match of the night. He's been candid this week, admitting that he has put pressure on himself by not getting the required results. He is my pick to win in Leeds though.

Mensur Suljovic takes on the 'Green Machine' knowing that a win would be enough to take him to the play-offs. He basically needs to better the results of Daryl Gurney and Gerwyn Price to progress. A defeat and he's likely to be usurped. The draw has not been good to 'The Gentle' who was at the wrong end of an 8-4 defeat to Rob Cross last week and now takes on the world number one. MVG won the previous encounter 7-3 back in round two and a similar result seems likely in Leeds.

MVG didn't throw a single 180 in his rout of Peter Wright last week and a repeat bet, this time involving Suljovic, could yield more success as there's no value in taking MVG to win at 3/10.

Best Bet: Back Mensur Suljovic to hit most 180s and lose to MVG @ 7/2 (2 units)

Voltage can break MVG league stranglehold

James Wade v Rob Cross

This is a terrific match to end the league stage of the tournament. Assuming MVG wins, a success for Rob Cross sees him top the table after 16 weeks of consistently great arras. He will trouser a cheque for £25,000 and become only the third table-topper after Phil Taylor and MVG.

Third-placed James Wade could have a very easy evening if those on his heals have already lost. But as things stand he needs a point to guarantee his proression but could also advance with a loss as his leg difference is superior to his rivals. Wade could only draw with Michael Smith last week and could have saved himself the stress with a better result.

Both players have had their highs this season, but it is Cross's consistency that makes me side with him. As it's the last tip of the group phase I'm getting adventurous and playing an OddsBoost on the basis that I think this game could be a corker.

Best Bet: Back Rob Cross to beat James Wade and Both to Throw 4 or more 180s (was 15/2) @ 17/2 (2 units)
