Premier League Darts Night 15 Tips: Can Rob Cross fend off MVG for top spot?

MVG needs a win to maintain pressure on table-topping Rob Cross

The penultimate evening of this season's Premier League group phase goes to Sheffield with only Rob Cross guaranteed a Play-Off berth. James Buttler hunts the best bets...

"MVG may have suffered his third defeat to Daryl Gurney last week, but he seized the Austrian Open trophy at the weekend beating Wright 6-5 in the semi-final. He is too good for 'Snakebite' in his current form."

Third-placed Wade can book O2 spot with Smith win

Michael Smith v James Wade

James Wade leads encounters with Michael Smith 16-3 and is playing far better darts than 'Bully Boy'. A win for third-placed Wade could cement his Play-Off place if other results oblige. If they don't, he would all but mathematically be safely at The O2 regardless. And it is surely a question of 'by how many?'

Smith has been well below par in this season's event and has lost the last nine meetings with Wade. Wade's form is strong with a semi-final at the Austrian Open at the weekend adding to a run of silverware which has included three Players Championship events in April. You need some imagination to see Wade tested by Smith who is without a win in six Premier League weeks.

Best Bet: Back James Wade -2.5 alternative handicap @ 7/4 (2 units)

Voltage can secure top spot and break MVG dominance

Mensur Suljovic v Rob Cross

Live on Sky Sports Darts

It is hard for me to suggest you back against a Rob Cross who battered Michael Smith 8-1 last week to claim top spot in the standings. It was a ninth win for 'Voltage' as he booked himself into the Play-Offs and took a huge step towards breaking Michael van Gerwen's stranglehold in this event (MVG has topped the table and then reached the final in all six of his previous Premier League seasons).

Mensur Suljovic has been an extremely tough competitor this season after finishing ninth in his 2018 debut season. He beat his good friend Peter Wright 7-5 last week and currently occupies fourth place. The problem for the 'Gentle' is that his last two opponents this season are the top two performers, Cross and MVG.

The head-to-head is no guide here with both players claiming six wins apiece. Suljovic took the points in the reverse fixture by a 7-5 margin.

The pressure is off now for Cross, but he will be driven by a desire to end the tournament at the top and claim the £25,000 on offer for the winner of the league stage. I can't look anywhere else than a Cross victory.

Best Bet: Back Rob Cross to beat Mensur Suljovic @ 5/6 (1 unit)

Gurney by a super chin

Daryl Gurney v Gerwyn Price
Thursday, 20:45
Live on Sky Sports Darts

Daryl Gurney is playing tremendous darts right now and is brim full of confidence. 'Superchin' reached the last four of last weekend's Austrian Open after bagging successive Premier League wins over Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen. The 8-5 win over MVG saw Gurney outmanoeuvre the Dutchman and rise to fifth in the standings, just one point behind Mensur Suljovic.

Gerwyn Price leads the head-to-head record between the pair by a commanding 8-2 but he will surely have to average more than the 89 he did in his defeat last week to trouble Gurney. Price still had hopes of making the Play-Offs, one point behind Gurney. Both players would probably need to win both remaining games to feature at The O2. A defeat in Sheffield and they are just about out.

Price beat Gurney 7-4 on the opening night of this season's Premier League in Newcastle. The Welshman is never to be underestimated despite not claiming a win since Round 11, but Gurney has all the momentum and is the play at 7/5.

Best Bet: Back Daryl Gurney to beat Gerwyn Price @ 7/5 (1 unit)

The value is on a pro-Wright bet, if you can find one

Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright

Live on Sky Sports Darts

MVG and Peter Wright have met 70 times before and MVG had won 55 times. 'Snakebite' has been seriously disappointing by his standards this season. He's tinkered and toiled but has lost his last four Premier League matches and hasn't won in nine rounds.

MVG may have suffered his third defeat to Daryl Gurney last week, but he seized the Austrian Open trophy at the weekend beating Wright 6-5 in the semi-final. He is too good for 'Snakebite' in his current form.

Inconsistent Wright surely can't upset MVG, but it's how you find the value on the understandably short 'Green Machine'. Unless you like skinny prices, it is preferable to find a pro-Wright punt that has a chance. The Scot is still capable of stringing a few darts together and to get him odds against to hit the most 180s is appealing.

Best Bet: Back Peter Wright to hit Most 180s and lose match to MVG @ 16/5 (2 units)
