Players Championship Finals Tips: Schindler to produce on the big stage

Schindler hoping for first ever win in this event

The Players Championship Finals gets underway on Friday afternoon and Abigail Davies is expecting a few upsets on the opening day...

"Razma became just the second player to hit 9-darters on back-to-back days on the Pro Tour last month, the only other player to do so being Phil Taylor."

Defending Champion Michael van Gerwen is 9/2 to win this tournament for a seventh time but the favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday evening is Gerwyn Price at 10/3.

The top 64 players on the PDC Pro Tour order of merit are in Minehead to compete for the £100,000 prize.

Jamie Hughes has had to withdraw from the event following a positive Covid-19 test and is replaced by Jelle Klassen. A welcome call-up for The Cobra who could do with a decent run to help him save his tour card.

Bring on The Wall

Martin Schindler has played superbly well away from the TV cameras this year. Unfortunately he only showed that form in his third Grand Slam group game, by which point he was already eliminated. He played with freedom as he beat Gerwyn Price with a 101.6 average and it should have been a fantastic confidence boost for the German.

The Wall has appeared in the Championship Finals twice before but has lost in the opening round on both occasions, I think he is much better equipped to get over the line in his first match this time around.

He's a player who has often struggled to deliver his best on the big stage but I'm backing him to bring his floor game to Stage Two and come through against Ian White at 1/1.

Razma to cause upset

At 13/5 I think Madars Razma is a good price to beat Dimitri Van den Bergh on the opening day in Butlins. The Dream-Maker missed the Grand Slam after testing positive for Covid-19 and could be caught cold on the opening day.

Razma became just the second player to hit 9-darters on back-to-back days on the Pro Tour last month, the only other player to do so being Phil Taylor. The treble 19 loving Latvian has not produced many eye-catching performances over recent months and he may have only won one of his six matches against Van den Bergh, but I fancy him to progress into the second round.
