We're down to the last 16 at the Grand Slam of Darts and it's a straight knock-out tournament from here on in. Tom Beresford provides his best bets from Wednesday and Thursday's round of 16 action...

"I will also be backing Whitlock to win the match at 13/8. His all-round game is in great shape, and the Aussie's finishing is arguably the best part of his game."

Whitlock can edge out Wright in tight affair

Peter Wright v Simon Whitlock

This heavily anticipated clash between Peter Wright and Simon Whitlock has all the makings of a classic. Whitlock, to his admission has been in the best form of his career over the last months. The Aussie overturned a 4-1 deficit as he edged out Gerwyn Price 5-4 to seal qualification for the last 16 as the Wizard fired in two 170 checkouts.

As for Snakebite the last few months haven't been the greatest for the world number two, but he's improved game-by-game in this event.

In terms of head-to-head meetings, It's currently 16-8 in favour of Wright, but Whitlock was victorious in their last recent meeting at the European Championship in Dortmund as the Aussie ran out a 10-8 winner. My recommended bet for this one is over 9.5 180's at 5/6 as I think this match could go the distance, and between them they've fired in 14 maximums.

I will also be backing Whitlock to win the match at 13/8. His all-round game is in great shape, and the Aussie's finishing is arguably the best part of his game. If Whitlock is given any sniff of an opportunity from Wright, he will grasp it with both hands.

On song Anderson to cover the handicap

Gary Anderson v Wesley Harms

Gary Anderson's had a magnificent start to the Grand Slam so far. This tournament is the one title that's escaped Anderson in previous years, and the Scot's made it publicly known over recent times that he's desperate to win it. Over the three matches, Anderson's fired in 12 maximums, and without any doubt, his performance against Ian White sent out a message to the rest of the competition as the two-time World Champion averaged 112.54 in a 5-1 assault of the Diamond.

Harms was fantastic in his 5-4 victory over Keegan Brown to secure qualification. The Dutchman averaged 103.98 in a slender 5-4 victory as he booked his place in the last 16. My recommend bet for this one is Anderson -4.5 legs handicap at 4/7. I really think Anderson will run out a convincing winner.

A close match expected between high class opponents

Michael Smith v Michael van Gerwen
Thursday, 22:00
Live on Sky Sports Action

This is the match of the last 16 stage. Bully Boy is currently in the form of his life, the St Helens ace missed five match darts to win the World Series of Darts finals just a few weeks ago, but the way that he has responded has been nothing short of exceptional. With three wins from three, and a 5-0 rout of five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, Smith really is coming into his own.

World number one Michael van Gerwen, has proved to be very much a beatable figure in 2018 with defeats to Jeffrey de Zwaan (twice) Steve West and Jonny Clayton, but he has still maintained a very high standard, and those names that have beaten Van Gerwen on television have had to produce mesmerising darts to see him off.

I fancy this match to be a close one and my recommended bet is over 15.5 legs at 8/13. In terms of head-to-head meetings, Van Gerwen currently leads 24-6, but Smith did convincingly beat him in an 8-4 victory at the Shanghai Masters back in July.

In form Clayton the man to beat

Jonny Clayton v Krzysztof Ratajski

Live on Sky Sports Action

Jonny Clayton proved the doubters wrong as the Welshman topped group A which included a superb 5-4 victory over world number one Van Gerwen. On current form, I really fancy Clayton to come out victorious in this one and the 11/10 makes plenty of appeal.

Payne a decent Price to upset Gerwyn

Josh Payne v Gerwyn Price
Wednesday, 20:00
Live on Sky Sports Action

This match could be a lot closer than anticipated, Price has been impressive in the competition, but he has shown signs of frailties at times. Payne himself has shown signs of prominence, but to his own admission, needs to up his game to compete with the likes of Price over a longer format. You can get Payne at 11/5 to spring a surprise win over the Welshman, and that's worth a wager.
