The 2021 World Grand Prix starts on Sunday, where a double-start and elite mental strength is required, and Abigail Davies is predicting an early exit for the reigning champion...
"Defending Champion Gerwyn Price has been in fine form over recent months, claiming the only two Euro Tour titles on offer, and at stages of last year’s Grand Prix was unplayable despite previously stating that he struggled with the double-start tournament"
The unique double-in, double-out tournament requires additional mental toughness. A format that can see one player down to a finish whilst his opponent is still struggling to find an opening double, stuck on 501.
I believe we'll see quite a few upsets in the opening round in Leicester
Defending Champion Gerwyn Price has been in fine form over recent months, claiming the only two Euro Tour titles on offer, and at stages of last year's Grand Prix was unplayable despite previously stating that he struggled with the double-start tournament.
However, he has a really difficult opener against Michael Smith on Sunday night, it should be a thriller and I have a sneaking feeling that Smith will come through this tough first round encounter, he is 15/8 to do so.
Chizzy's doubling is now his strength
Dave Chisnall v Mensur Suljovic is an interesting one. Mensur's form since his return to the PDC circuit has been sublime. It's been great to see the Austrian and his methodical approach back on the big stage.
As for Chizzy, it's been a similar story for months. His usually reliable scoring has gone awry but his finishing, the thing that has so often been his achilles heel, has notably improved. Given the nature of the event, I'm backing the two-time World Grand Prix runner-up, Chisnall, to come through a close encounter 2-1 at 5/2.
Ryan Searle to impress
The second section of the draw is wide open and I think that'll be the quarter that sees an unseeded player progress.
Ryan Searle, Luke Humphries and last year's runner-up Dirk van Duijvenbode all have a chance but I'm backing Heavy Metal to beat Dimitri van den Bergh on the opening night and then to come through his quarter at 9/1.
