The Silencer can continue to stay true to his nickname and take out another Lakeside favourite
The Silencer can continue to stay true to his nickname and take out another Lakeside favourite

It's semi-final time at Lakeside and Jaymes Monte has picked out his best bet from Saturday's action...

"With the benefit of hindsight, Jeff Smith always had the potential to cause a few upsets here."

James Wilson, Scott Waites, Alan Norris and Robbie Green have all fallen by the wayside this week after being made favourite for the Lakeside title, as the unpredictability of this championship shows no signs of abating.

With the benefit of hindsight, Jeff Smith always had the potential to cause a few upsets here and his pre-tournament odds of around 100.099/1 now look huge. But I doubt that even the Canadian himself could have anticipated a run to the semi-finals in his debut year.

The Silencer won a PDC Tour card back in 2012, so he clearly has the quality, but was never really able to give it a good go on the tour, presumably due to financial constraints exaggerated by the considerable travel distance from New Brunswick. A 2013 PDC World Cup appearance alongside John Part was the height of his success at the oche until this week.

Today he meets another player in uncharted territory in the shape of the equally impressive Scott Mitchell, after he beat Brian Dawson 5-2 to reach his first Lakeside semi.

Mitchell has been the betting favourite in each of his three matches here this week, while Smith has been the underdog at every stage. Nothing changes in that respect today with the Canadian at odds of 2.68/5 and Scotty Dog at odds of 1.68/13.

I stated at the start of the tournament that I'd be looking to mainly back outsiders in this most unpredictable of tournaments, and although I seem to somehow have missed the majority of upsets, I'm not about to abandon that tactic now. Smith was hugely impressive in taking out the much-fancied Robbie Green on Friday night and looks good value to book his place in the final.
