BDO World Championship Tips: Silverback to down Kong

O'Shea has the nous to see off Green and reach a fifth Lakeside semi-final.

We're down to the business end of the 2013 Lakeside World Championships and Jaymes Monte has picked out his best bet of the night for Thursday...

"The likeable Silverback has made four Lakeside semi-finals and two finals in the past 11 years."

There wouldn't be a more popular winner of the BDO World Championship title this weekend than Tony O'Shea; both amongst his fellow professionals and darts fans. The likeable Silverback has made four Lakeside semi-finals and two finals in the past 11 years, but has never been able to grasp the coveted prize. Just three men now stand between him and the realisation of a dream.

So far this week the 51-year-old has been his usual steady self. In wins over John Walton and Steve Douglas O'Shea has dropped only two sets and nine legs with a steady tournament average of 88.08.

Robbie Green's week, meanwhile, began with a bang as he defeated defending champion Christian Kist in the first round with a 91.11 average. Before a more sedate, but equally emphatic, 4-1 win over Scott Mitchell in round two.

On the balance of what has gone before us this week you'd say that this looks a difficult match to call, but a glance at the previous head-to-head statistics shows just why O'Shea is made the strong favourite. Four times Silverback and Kong have crossed paths; four times Silverback has won the battle of the primates.

Experience can count for a lot in this game and so considering the head-to-head stats, Green's record of having never passed the last-16 stage in his three previous appearances at Lakeside and O'Shea's pedigree on this stage, we have to back the elder statesman to do the job, and probably with a little to spare.
