Jaymes Monte picks out his best bet from Monday night's Lakeside action as the opening round draws to a close...
"I fancy Waites will be solid enough to swat away an opponent whose Frimley Green three-dart average is in the low 80s."
Scott Waites is, in my opinion, the best player in this BDO World Championship field by a long distance. But, for whatever reason, he tightens up on the Lakeside stage and has yet to make it past the quarter-finals in five visits to Frimley Green.
Although he hasn't said as much I fancy that if he had won the coveted Lakeside title in the past few years then he would have by now switched to the PDC, and he'd be making a big impact. Scotty 2 Hotty has shown on multiple occasions at the Grand Slam of Darts that he can mix it with the best from both sides of the darting divide, and despite his Lakeside troubles he goes into this one as a worthy favourite.
For all his problems here, however, he has never struggled in the opening round. In fact Waites has dropped just two sets in five years of qualifying for Lakeside.
This year it is Dutchman Willy van de Wiel who stands between Waites and a place in the last 16.
The pair have faced each other five times previously in their careers, with the Englishman winning four, and he is a solid 1.21/5 chance to make it five from six this evening.
That's obviously a little short to be suggesting as a bet, but I do like the 2.245/4 about Waites winning the match 3-0. The pressure that he obviously feels at Lakeside may get to him later in the week, but I fancy he'll be solid enough to swat away an opponent whose Frimley Green three-dart average is in the low 80s.
Back Waites to win 3-0 @ 2.245/4
