Jaymes Monte picks out his best bet on day one of the BDO World Championship as the action at Lakeside gets underway...
"The Dutchman will be making his fifth appearance here at Lakeside and has already reached two semi-finals and a quarter-final."
In a wide-open championship such as this, there are very few 'gimme' matches and where almost any player can beat any other player I'll be mainly sticking to backing outsiders throughout the week. Or at least until we get to the latter rounds.
And I'm going to kick off proceedings by tipping youngster Jan Dekker to beat three-time world champion and number three seed, Mr BDO, Martin Adams.
The Dutchman will be making his fifth appearance here at Lakeside and has already reached two semi-finals and a quarter-final. The only year that he failed to reach the last-eight was when he lost in the first round to eventual winner Christian Kist. Last year he was unfortunate to lose an epic semi-final in a final-set decider against Alan Norris.
Although I'm not sure that he has the quality or consistency to yet consider making a switch across the divide, he is one of the stronger players in the BDO and particularly in this tournament's recent history.
We also know that Double Dekker won't be afraid to beat the BDO legend. Although it was Dekker that went into last season's Lakeside quarter-final meeting as the seeded player, Wolfie was the betting favourite. A 5-2 scoreline in favour of the Dutchman was an accurate reflection of the way that the game panned out.
We're looking at odds of 3.02/1 on the 'outsider' here and that's where the value lies on day one at Frimley Green in this best-of-5-sets contest.
Jan Dekker to beat Martin Adams @ 3.02/1
