Premier League Darts Night 4 Newcastle Tips: Wright to bite back

Peter Wright Darts
Peter Wright will be looking to build on positive Pro Tour form in Newcastle

Peter Wright finished bottom of the Premier League table in 2023 and is yet to get off the mark in this year's campaign but Abigail Davies thinks there are plenty of signs to indicate that a first victory is just around the corner for Snakebite.

  • Peter Wright to produce floor form

  • MvG 9/43.25 favourite to win Premier League

  • Michael Smith to keep picking up points

  • After three weeks of Premier League action, it's no surprise to see Michael van Gerwen at the top of the table having won two weekly titles already.

MvG is the only player in the field to have tasted victory in this event previously, denying Gerwyn Price in the final back in May to go on and win it for a record-breaking seventh time.

Mighty Mike is now the 9/43.25 favourite to go all the way again this time around.

    Encouraging signs for Peter Wright

There were plenty of question marks surrounding the form of Peter Wright at the back end of 2023 and start of 2024. His performance levels, results and the way his darts were entering the board caused huge concern. Many wondered whether he would have benefitted from not being included in this year's Premier League line-up.

However, even though he is still yet to pick up points on the 2024 darting roadshow, the form he has shown in the first four Players Championship events can't be ignored. It could potentially help to reignite the fire for Wright.

Snakebite has already said that electing not to play in a number of Pro Tour events last year served him badly and he has learnt from that mistake.

A player of his calibre will of course be expecting to go on deep runs and pick up titles frequently. But had you asked him after the first two World Series events whether he'd be pleased with a return of two semi-finals from the first four Players Championship events, I think he probably would have said yes.

Across his matches in Wigan and Leicester, we saw him win with a 104 average, play with great rhythm and also win ugly at times. As a result, you'd expect him to head to Newcastle with quite a bit of confidence.

    Peter Wright v Luke Littler - 20:15

First up for the two-time world champion is Luke Littler and unsurprisingly the 17-year-old is favourite to come out on top. However, I think there is value in backing Wright to pick up his first two points on Thursday based on what we've seen from him of late.

The Nuke in particular has been hitting 180s with great regularity of late and you can back +5.5 maximums in this contest at 11/102.11.

There have been real flickers of fine form from Peter, he seems to be getting better and better, and let's not forget that he could very well have beaten MvG last week had things gone his way.

Even though he ultimately missed 17 darts at the outer ring in that contest, overall, it's another indicator that Wright's game is heading in the right direction.

    Michael Smith v Nathan Aspinall - 19:15

The league table also looks pretty bleak for Nathan Aspinall at the moment, despite flying out of the blocks in weeks two and three, The Asp was unable to sustain a high enough level to register a first win, surrendering leads against MvG and Luke Humphries.

The Matchplay champion was quite underwhelming in Leicester earlier this week too and was audibly frustrated after being defeated by Florian Hempel on Tuesday.

He faces his practice partner Michael Smith who has won four of their last five meetings and already you get the sense that Bully Boy is going to be quite good at grinding out results in this Premier League campaign.

I'm backing him to win this one, hit the most 180s and highest checkout at 9/25.50.
