With just over three weeks until Mayweather Jr v McGregor in Las Vegas on Saturday August 26, interest continues to rise and it has already broken betting records on the Exchange. Max Liu has the lowdown...

“It’s one of the most anticipated fights in recent memory and with £11.3m bet on the outcome alone already, this is now the biggest boxing betting event in Betfair history."

We're still more than three weeks away from Floyd Mayweather Jr taking on Conor McGregor in Las Vegas, but the fight has already become the biggest boxing event in Betfair history.

A massive £11.3m has now been traded on the Exchange market for the fight which sees the two men meet at light-middleweight level for one of the most eagerly anticipated bouts in years. The previous boxing record was Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao, which traded £8.9m.

The fight is controversial because it sees UFC star McGregor make his ring debut against the 49-year-old Mayweather. Some commentators think the event is an abomination while others are relishing the cross-code contest. Mayweather is 1/5 to beat his Irish opponent, with McGregor 5/1, although at least one our own Adam Baylis has outlined reasons to suggest there could be a shock on August 26.

As for the betting, Katie Baylis, Betfair spokeswoman, said: "It's one of the most anticipated fights in recent memory and with £11.3m bet on the outcome alone already, this is now the biggest boxing betting event in Betfair history.

"We expect this fight to trade well over £50m and could even get to the £100m mark, which would be one of our biggest sporting events of all time.

"As you would expect, most of the money is for Mayweather Jr, however, 40% of bets are on McGregor, compared to 34% on Mayweather Jr and 26% on the draw."

McGregor received a blow this week when former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi, who had been recruited to spar with the UFC man, quit the training camp.

Malignaggi took exception to images that were released on social media, which appeared to show him being pushed down during sparring by McGregor. As a parting shot, Malignaggi called the event a "circus".

It's certainly got people talking and betting and, with three weeks to go, the anticipation is reaching fever pitch.

"The biggest single bet was £100k on Mayweather Jr at the start of the month and we are sure to see plenty more bets of this nature as we edge closer to this massive sporting event," Baylis said.
