It's a busy weekend of live action but this fight towers over the competition. Betfair's boxing writer Frankie Monkhouse checks the betting...

"A second points cheer on the bounce is 4/6 favourite"

Errol Spence v Shawn Porter
Sunday, 04:00
Live on Sky Sports

Treat for the purists

Followers of domestic boxing enjoy the return to action of hard-hitting heavyweight Daniel Dubois on Friday evening as Dynamite looks to add the Commonwealth title to his trophy haul. Across the Atlantic and the second half of a fascinating double header takes place in Los Angeles.

A world title unification fight at welterweight pairs American duo Errol Spence Jr and Shawn Porter. This is one for the purists and will be shown live on Sky Sports from 4.00am UK time. Worth staying up for? We'd say so and the betting allows followers to ramp up their interest in the late-night action.

Spence deserves more credit

Errol Spence Jr puts his IBF world title at risk as he aims to take the famous WBC strap currently owned by his welterweight rival Shawn Porter. The Truth goes into this contest with the better record of the two champions involved, boasting a perfect 25-fight CV that includes no less than 17 knockouts. That will ensure he's popular in the betting, especially amongst casual punters.

29-year-old Texan Spence was last seen adding the scalp of Mikey Garcia to his belt and that was a result that shocked most in the industry. Californian Garcia was ranked by many as the best in the business and a real pound-for-pound great of the modern game. Spence's win in Arlington may have upset the traders but it proved what those close to the fighter always believed, he deserves more credit than he has received.

Will Errol build on that career best win with another this weekend? Betfair traders certainly believe so and have chalked a 26th career positive up at 1/8. That will push backers into the method of victory betting. If you fancy Spence to win it'll be worth predicting how he'll get the job done. A second points cheer on the bounce is 4/6 favourite, the KO/TKO offered at 2/1, both quotes taken from the sportsbook.

Porter on a run of comeback wins

Shawn Porter has been around at the top level of boxing for a long time, but he is perhaps best remembered amongst UK fight fans from that enthralling 2014 meeting with Kell Brook. Special K won the IBF world title in Carson by a majority decision but Porter more than played his part in what was a gripping contest. The 31-year-old Las Vegas based boxer shows a record of 30 wins against two defeats and one draw.

The other loss on his card came at the hands of Keith Thurman three summers ago but there was no disgrace in that performance either, again edged out on the scorecards. Since going down to Thurman, Shawn Porter has rallied to win each of his next four and get his career back on track. He stopped Andre Berto in nine, before outpointing Andrian Granados, Danny Garcia and Yordenis Ugas.

Despite that run of form, Shawn Porter starts as second favourite in the betting and carries a chunky 5/1 price tag on the Betfair Sportsbook. He's better than that, so we expect bits and pieces of attention from value hunters. A points victory is 15/2, the knockout 16/1. Can't split them? We wouldn't put anyone off the draw at 22/1.
