Betfair's boxing writer Frankie Monkhouse is excited about Sunday's world title fight in Brooklyn and he aims to add a bit more spice with a winning bet...
"There’s more to get excited about in the method of victory market, 13/10 there to be shot at about a points verdict"
Boxing's top prize on the line
The BoxNation cameras take us stateside in the early hours of Sunday morning for a welterweight world title fight that has kept most of us guessing in the build-up. At the Barclay's Center, Brooklyn Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter decide the destination of the vacant WBC world championship belt, the sport's top prize.
There's not a lot between the fighters in the pre-bout betting but traders do sway towards Philadelphia's Garcia who brings a professional record of 34-1-0 against the 28-2-1 of his opponent.
You can pick the winner or have your say on a number of exciting markets at Betfair including method of victory and round betting.
Big price about another knockout performance
The one slight blot on Danny Garcia's record so far came at the hands of Keith Thurman when losing a split decision to 'One Time' at this venue last March. The scoring judges handed in papers reading 112-116, 115-113, 113-115, denying 30-year-old Garcia by the slightest of margins and bringing an end to his proud unbeaten record in the process.
Tough to take but the beaten man didn't dwell on that decision for too long and fired back with an eye-catching win over Brandon Rios in Las Vegas earlier this year, beating 'Bam Bam' into a ninth-round stoppage to catapult himself back towards the big-time. Garcia looked like a man on a mission that night and more of the same is expected here.
The betting has 'Swift' favourite for a 35th career cheer with punters making him a [1.76] jolly on the Betfair Exchange. There's more to get excited about in the method of victory market, 13/10 there to be shot at about a points verdict against the chunky 5/1 for a second knockout on the bounce.
Followers of the stats will make that a worthwhile bet considering Danny brings a 57% KO average.
Broner upset shouldn't be overlooked
This is by no means the Danny Garcia show and despite his odds-on price tag the betting fav faces a real challenge in opponent Shawn Porter who is more than good enough to cause an upset and spoil the party. The 30-year-old Las Vegas resident proudly wears a 28-2-1 record with those two defeats coming against Kell Brook and Keith Thurman.
No shame in either and Porter pushed Brook hard in Carson before dropping a majority decision and his IBF world title.
113-115 on all three scorecards shows the Thurman loss was another nail-biter but there's confidence to be taken from Porter's past performances, including wins over respected fighters such as Paul Malignaggi, Devon Alexander and - standout of the lot - Adrian Broner. That 2015 points win over 'The Problem' earned Shawn a flood of new fans.
The victor wasn't given a hope by most that night, but the pre-fight odds and expectations of so-called experts is rarely counted by elite level fighters. Some in the game struggle to take to Porter's style and that would explain why he has drawn one and lost a majority decision but there's no doubt he's a quality operator who, on his night, could win this fight and claim the belt.
Showtime is [2.54] on the Betfair Exchange with a points win 15/8 through the Sportsbook, much more likely than a KO/TKO at 6/1. The fight to go the distance, regardless of who wins it, is 1/3.
