Having missed out on the last two major international tournaments, Denmark will arrive in South Africa looking to make up for lost time...
The stigma attached to the Danes is that they're as solid and reliable as they are unspectacular. Devoid of any real flair and panache, Denmark will surely struggle when things get tight, and while they're a good bet to qualify from the group - at [2.08] - their price of [160.0] to win the whole thing seems fair enough.
Nation: Denmark
Also known as...
'Danish Dynamite'
Route to South Africa...
The Danes were thoroughly impressive as they beat rivals Sweden home and away, as well as taking four points off of group favourites Portugal. Morten Olsen's men struggled against Hungary, but aside from that they couldn't be faulted and as a result go into the World Cup in confident mood.
World Cup Pedigree...
South Africa will be their fourth appearance in a World Cup, and on each previous occasion, the Danes have made it out of the group stage. Their best showing was in 1998, when eventual winners Brazil knocked them out in the Quarter Finals. Having failed to qualify in 2006, the pressure will be on them in 2010 to make up for their failure of four years ago.
They'll be relying on...
Nicklas Bendtner showing the type of form that he constantly claims he is capable of. Arsenal's egotistical striker was superb for his country during the qualification period. However, those who believe in him feel he has the capability to become one of the world's best and if Denmark are to have a good tournament, Bendtner will need to produce for his country what thus far he has been unable to produce for his club.
Something you may not have known is...
Denmark's greatest sporting moment arrived in 1992, when they beat Germany 2-0 to win the European Championships in neighbouring Sweden. The triumph was made all the more remarkable considering that the Danes weren't even supposed to partake in the tournament, after failing to make it through the qualification campaign.
Their place was awarded to them only after Yugoslavia were ejected from the competition for political reasons and the rest as they say, is history.
