Since their exploits of 1990, the Cameroonians have failed to live up to the expectations that followed as a result. But 2010 could be the year that they finally get back on the World Cup wagon...
They are the highest-ranked African team and possess arguably the finest striker that the continent has ever produced, and despite a horrific recent record, Cameroon should do well in South Africa. If you fancy them to get out of the group, a [2.08] chance, then a back-to-lay wager on them at [130.0] to win it may also tickle your fancy.
Nation: Cameroon
Also Known as...
'The indomitable Lions'
Route to South Africa...
Things didn't start too well, but after getting their heads together, the Indomitable Lions roared past the likes of Gabon, Togo and Morocco to ensure qualification. African teams are often accused of having soft centres, yet the same can't be said of Cameroon, who conceded just twice in the final six-match qualifying phase.
World Cup Pedigree...
No African team has more World Cup experience than Cameroon. 2010 will be their sixth appearance at the tournament, although since reaching the Quarter Finals in 1990, they have failed to get past the group stages in three subsequent attempts. One win in their last nine World Cup matches is a run of form they'll be desperate to put right, because if they don't, their stay in South Africa will be too short for their vociferous supporters to tolerate.
They'll be relying on...
Samuel Eto'o terrorising Europe's finest defenders in the same manner as he has done on so many occasions in club football. On his day, the Internazionale front-man is impossible to contain, and having scored in two Champions League finals, he is not one to hide on the biggest of occasions. Jean Makoun, Stephen Mbia and Alex Song all have pivotal roles to play for Cameroon, yet none are as important as Eto'o, who has the ability to score any type of goal against any type of opposition.
Something you may not have known is...
Samuel Eto'o was so delighted with his team-mates for qualifying that he splashed out and bought each squad member an extravagant gold watch. The lavish reward came to light when Arsenal's Alex Song couldn't contain his excitement after qualification back in November:
"Eto'o is a good guy and sometimes he wants to give the players some challenges to boost them - so he said that if we qualified he'd give every player a watch.
"We know we can buy them, but it's a good motivation. We weren't playing for the watches though - we're happy to have them but we were playing to go to the World Cup."
